Updated to Q1 2018
Supply of polymeric methyl di-p-phenylene isocyanate (PMDI) increased following the restart of China’s Wanhua Chemical’s two Ningbo plants in late January and early February respectively. There was also additional supply of PMDI import cargoes into China from a new Saudi start-up – Sadara Chemical – since late last year. However, supply of monomeric methyl di-p-phenylene isocyanate (MMDI) remained relatively tight in Q1 as Sadara only produced PMDI and not MMDI.
Demand was largely stagnant for PMDI, with buyers mostly purchasing on a need-to-basis when prices were near their peaks in January. MMDI demand declined in Q1 as buyers were resistant to the excessive prices, with some resorting to cutting their plant production as they were not able to pass on the cost increase to end-users.
Updated to Q1 2018
Supply was overall stable in Q1, with shorter supply from January to around mid-February having turned longish by end-March in domestic China. A couple of major eastern China-based producers’ plants had recovered normal production by end-February after having been running at reduced rates. Export availability from Japan and South Korea remained relatively short ahead of plant turnarounds in these two countries in Q2.
Demand was subdued as buyers were lukewarm to the prices when they were hovering near their peaks in January. Downstream foam makers were buying on a need-to basis and some had resorted to cutting their plant production as they were not able to pass on the cost increase to their customers.
ICIS is the only publication that provides a weekly price assessment on Isocyanates, Toluene di-isocyanate (or TDI) and methylene di-p-isocyanate (or MDI) in Asia.
For TDI, the report provides comprehensive coverage of the key China market, including cost & freight (CFR) China spot and monthly contract prices, and domestic prices for the North, South and East of China.
An assessment is also provided for South East Asia, alongside commentary on both the delivered and Indonesia and Malaysia markets. The cost, insurance and freight (CIF) India quote and commentary rounds up our TDI market coverage.
For MDI, we monitor both spot CFR import and domestic prices in China for both polymeric and monomeric or pure MDI.
To deliver greater context to the assessed prices, China’s many import statistics are provided, together with details of monthly production of upholstered furniture in China.
Feedstock Benzene, news of production output, and unexpected plant outages are also covered. We list deals, bids and offers that deliver easy reference assessments for our customers and this information also helps them in their decision making.
We speak to all the major players who produce, buy and sell isocyanates as this builds up a comprehensive and unbiased view of the market.
This is useful for participants looking for an independent reference or benchmark for spot transactions.
