Updated to Q2 2017
Polymeric methyl di-p-phenylene isocyanate (PMDI) spot import prices in China retreated in early April. Average prices hit a 2017 peak in March, in tandem with the uptrend in domestic prices since December last year amid tight supply due to an outage at a major Chinese producer’s plant.
Average PMDI prices hit a floor at $2,250/tonne CFR (cost & freight) China in the first half of May, down by $590/tonne, or 26%, since early April, before regaining some ground to reach $2,550/tonne CFR China at the end of June. Average southeast Asia and India prices also tracked the decline in China prices to reach $2,500/tonne CFR SE (southeast) Asia and $2,450/tonne CIF (cost, insurance & freight) India at the end of June.
The retreat in PMDI prices was a result of lengthening supply as Asian plants were mostly running normally in March/April, although some plants were shut in May for scheduled maintenance. The reduced supply in May was being offset by tepid demand with the onset of the traditional summer lull in demand.
Updated to Q2 2017
Toluene di-isocyanate (TDI) spot import prices in Asia were on a moderate downtrend in the third quarter with the alleviation of relatively tighter supply as most northeast Asian plants have recovered from their scheduled turnarounds.
Average TDI import prices slipped by $400/tonne over a near three-month period to $3,250/tonne CFR (cost & freight) China/Hong Kong on 28 June. Average import prices in southeast Asia and India declined in tandem with China/Hong Kong prices, falling by $400-425/tonne to $3,350/tonne CFR southeast (SE) Asia/CIF (cost, insurance & freight) India in the same period.
Asia TDI prices had declined due to ample supply in the midst of the traditional lull demand season every June/July.
ICIS is the only publication that provides a weekly price assessment on Isocyanates, Toluene di-isocyanate (or TDI) and methylene di-p-isocyanate (or MDI) in Asia.
For TDI, the report provides comprehensive coverage of the key China market, including cost & freight (CFR) China spot and monthly contract prices, and domestic prices for the North, South and East of China.
An assessment is also provided for South East Asia, alongside commentary on both the delivered and Indonesia and Malaysia markets. The cost, insurance and freight (CIF) India quote and commentary rounds up our TDI market coverage.
For MDI, we monitor both spot CFR import and domestic prices in China for both polymeric and monomeric or pure MDI.
To deliver greater context to the assessed prices, China’s many import statistics are provided, together with details of monthly production of upholstered furniture in China.
Feedstock Benzene, news of production output, and unexpected plant outages are also covered. We list deals, bids and offers that deliver easy reference assessments for our customers and this information also helps them in their decision making.
We speak to all the major players who produce, buy and sell isocyanates as this builds up a comprehensive and unbiased view of the market.
This is useful for participants looking for an independent reference or benchmark for spot transactions.
