US methyl di-p phenylene isocyanate (MDI) supply remained tight on ongoing global supply disruptions. BASF and Dow both declared forces majeure in late January following a period of severe winter weather in the US Gulf.
MDI demand remained healthy in Q1 and the market is expected to post another year of strong growth in 2018. Demand for downstream polyurethane systems was said to be good and rebuilding efforts from major hurricanes could give a boost to the construction and automotive industries.

TDI supply remained tight in the first quarter amid ongoing global supply shortages. BASF took down its TDI plant in Ludwigshafen, Germany, to install a new reactor while BASF also declared a force majeure on TDI from its Gesimar, Louisiana, plant early in the quarter following a period of severe winter weather in the US Gulf.
Demand for downstream polyurethane systems remains good and is expected to post another year of strong growth in 2018. The strength in demand has magnified the market impact of tight supplies for TDI.
