Updated to Q2 2018
US supply for methyl di-p phenylene isocyanate (MDI) improved during the second quarter as US plants raised their operating rates while Asian suppliers increased their allocations to North America owing to depressed prices in the Asian region. Most of the improvement in supply was seen in the polymeric MDI (PMDI) market while supply in the monomeric MDI (MMDI) market remains tight.
Demand for US MDI was mostly steady in the second quarter. Demand from the automotive sector was heard to have softened compared to the past year, although this had been anticipated by the market. Demand from the construction sector improved as the construction industry moved into a seasonally stronger season.
Updated to Q2 2018
US toluene di-isocyanate (TDI) supply loosened over the second quarter as US plants were heard to be operating at improved rates while Asian suppliers lifted their allocations to North America on longer supply within Asia. Buyers said that they did not experience any real difficulties securing their necessary quantities during the quarter. A slowdown in demand also created additional availability as buyers needed less material compared with the prior quarter.
US TDI demand slowed in the second quarter as weaker demand from the mattress and furniture sector slowed TDI consumption. Demand from the automotive sector was heard to have slowed while other polyurethane applications are seeing steady demand. A prolonged period of rising prices over the past year was heard to have eliminated some demand for TDI. Latin American TDI demand was described as seasonally slow.
The US isocyanates report covers domestic prices for toluene di-isocyanate (TDI) and methylene di-p-isocyanate (MDI) in the US, with some commentary on Latin American markets.
