Updated to Q3 2018
July spot prices slipped as European players anticipated the arrival of volumes from OCI’s new joint venture plant in Texas, the US. Price direction reversed after delays due to Russian World Cup chemical transport restrictions – methanol was belatedly added to the list – squeezed supply, alongside European turnarounds including Norway’s Statoil. Water levels at the Kaub measuring point on the Rhine river plunged below a metre, creating logistical challenges as barges were forced to carry smaller loads.
Low Rhine water levels artificially reduced the pull on methanol out of Rotterdam as barges could carry only 50% of capacity at times, with railways also congested. Besides this, methanol consumers described healthy consumption and in cases were running at full capacity, as long as they could get hold of material. Run rates in the biodiesel sector were believed to have improved after early-2018 difficulties amid an influx of Argentinian and Indonesian imports.
The Europe methanol report publishes both spot and quarterly contract prices, both of which form benchmarks in the European market. We also publish daily prices via the price alert system giving a complete overview of pricing in the European market.
