Updated to Q2 2018
Second-quarter European methanol prices were rolled over. Early in Q2, disrupted production locally and globally, from Europe to Venezuela, weighed on availability. Quarterly pricing was eclipsed by spot values amid a hangover from Saudi outages in late 2017, delayed extra capacity in the US, Russia and Iran, and World Cup chemical movement restrictions temporarily freezing methanol exports from Russia. OCI's joint-venture 1.285m tonne Natgasoline plant in the US hit commercial production in the last days of June.
European spot methanol prices were partly boosted amid talk of vessels moving from Rotterdam towards the Mediterranean, an unusual flow. This demand was partially linked to production issues at an Azeri plant after a restart in March 2018. The Mediterranean does not normally affect key storage hub of Rotterdam but amid ARA’s tighter market balance it added pressure. Healthy, stable demand was seen across most downstream methanol markets, with a clear exception from biodiesel which was hit by a number of plant shutdowns.
The Europe methanol report publishes both spot and quarterly contract prices, both of which form benchmarks in the European market. We also publish daily prices via the price alert system giving a complete overview of pricing in the European market.
