Updated to Q4 2017
A drier Rotterdam market in the fourth quarter of 2017 felt the impact of flows out of Europe and unexpected shutdowns at methanol plants in key producing regions. This includes Malaysia, Saudi Arabia, Brunei and Oman. Azerbaijan’s plant began a winter shutdown. Meanwhile OCI’s US Natgasoline plant start-up was delayed to Q2 2018, after initially planning to come online in Q4 2017.
At the same time, delayed vessels were noted from at least two suppliers in November and December. Additionally some buyers had requests to push back deliveries in December while other suppliers were involved in product swaps.
European methanol demand was stable at a healthy level in the fourth quarter of 2017.
Healthy demand was noted in Europe, with the key traditional downstream market of formaldehyde’s performance seen in the context of Europe's overall economic growth and with the start-up of a new formaldehyde plant in Hungary in October.
Spot demand was healthy, which may have been linked to the regional supply squeeze.
The Europe methanol report publishes both spot and quarterly contract prices, both of which form benchmarks in the European market. We also publish daily prices via the price alert system giving a complete overview of pricing in the European market.
