Updated to Q1 2018
European methanol supply was squeezed in the first quarter of 2018, with short availability for prompt delivery in Europe for much of February and March. Unusually low stock levels in Rotterdam were blamed, following vessel delays, and late 2017 factors including unplanned shutdowns in the Middle East and an optimisation towards Asia which diverted or drew molecules out of Europe.
Contractual downstream demand was healthy in the first quarter of 2018, a rare weak spot provided by the biodiesel sector grappling with an influx of imports amid an antidumping battle. A lull midway through the quarter came from China’s Lunar New Year holiday which reduced global demand. Spot demand for very prompt delivery was boosted at the tail end of Q1 thanks to low stock levels in Rotterdam, with some players believed to be covering shorts.
The Europe methanol report publishes both spot and quarterly contract prices, both of which form benchmarks in the European market. We also publish daily prices via the price alert system giving a complete overview of pricing in the European market.
