Monopropylene glycol Overview Transcript
Europe monopropylene glycol is a big distribution market in Europe and spot is the most liquid value there.
The main market drivers include supply and demand and to a lesser extent the propylene feedstock movement.
The downstream sectors, there’s a wide variety of those, include the unsaturated polyester resins sector, food packaging, surfactants and on the seasonal front, there’s the anti-freeze and de-icer sectors.
The overall pricing trend so far has been increasing and firm, this is due to the harsh winter in 2009-early 2010 and due to a number of planned and unplanned outages both at the cracker and for MPG. Also robust demand has kept prices relatively firm.
In terms of the future outlook, this depends on how the additional capacity in the market following recent expansions and forthcoming expansions in the market will be managed effectively.

Monopropylene glycol: Market overview
Updated to Q1 2017
The US mono propylene glycol (MPG) market is expected to remain largely stable in the first quarter of 2017, with pricing expected to follow the movement of feedstock propylene. Market participants have previously said that propylene prices are generally expected to be steady-to-lower in 2017, which in turn could see MPG prices move in a corresponding manner. However, a rebound in propylene prices in January may see MPG prices rise during the quarter. Supply is expected to remain readily available, while demand for downstream de-icers will likely begin to drop off towards the end of the quarter.
Sentiment in the European MPG industrial-grade spot market is likely to be firm in the first quarter, provided winter-season demand remains robust and spot availability remains reduced. There is also talk of one main MPG player being less active in the spot market in the first quarter because of maintenance reasons. However, the latter has not been officially confirmed.
In Asia, MPG spot prices in the first quarter will likely be stable, backed by generally firm upstream propylene and feedstock propylene oxide (PO) prices amid ample MPG supply. Demand, on the other hand, is expected to weaken from mid-January to mid-February because of the Lunar New Year holiday celebrated in China and elsewhere in the region.

Mono Propylene Glycol Methodology
About Monopropylene glycol
Mono propylene glycol (MPG) otherwise referred to as propylene glycol (PG), is a clear, colourless, odourless, hygroscopic, viscous liquid. It is relatively non-toxic but is a mild irritant and defatting agent. PG is combustible but not flammable at room temperature.
PG is used in the manufacture of high performance unsaturated polyester resins (UPR), as well as engine coolants, antifreeze applications, aircraft wing and runway de-icer, food, pharmaceuticals and personal care products, and paints/coatings.
The manufacture of plasticisers and hydraulic brake fluids consume considerable quantities of propylene glycol and it is also used in the manufacture of non-ionic detergents which are utilised not only in the petroleum, sugar refining and paper making industries, but also in the preparation of toiletries, antibiotics and liquid washing formulations.
