Non-Phthalate Plasticizers: Market overview
Updated to Q2 2018
Supply for diisononyl phthalate (DINP) is expected to remain tight with the supply situation of feedstock isononanol (INA) not expecting to lengthen anytime soon.
Supply of spot dioctyl phthalate (DOP) in the region is expected to be lower year on year, as one producer in northeast Asia is in the process of converting its DOP line.
With the traditionally peak demand season approaching in Europe and Asia, sources are expecting the market prices to remain supported or firmer.
Asian producers should not be facing too many issues in offloading diisononyl phthalate (DINP) or dioctyl terephthalate (DOTP) during this period.
There are no planned maintenance programmes heard for plasticizers for the second quarter. Any maintenance that is forecast to take place is not expected to impact the ability to cover all commitments. However, with some upstream restrictions expected for feedstock 2-EH, it remains to be seen if this will be felt on the DOTP market. Regular imports volumes are expected from Asia and Turkey.
The traditional peak demand period is seen for plasticizers in the second quarter. One producer said all DINP orders for April had been placed already in the second half of March. Other plasticizers, such as DOTP, are also expected to see robust demand, with growth rates at 3-5% for 2018.
Plasticizers supply is heard to be at healthy levels. With less buying appetite for imports versus domestically produced material, supply appears to be steady. Imports, also, have been heard to be less competitively priced going into the second quarter.
The second quarter marks the start of peak season in the US plasticizers markets. Plasticizers should see an uptick in demand in the second quarter through late summer. The construction sector, in particular, is expected to see growth, especially with some delayed demand uptick from natural disaster rebuilding.
