Updated to Q2 2018
European nylon 6 supply remained balanced throughout the Q2, lengthening in late Q2 as demand began to soften in certain downstream sectors and regions with the onset of summer and volumes from new capacity reached the market. Meanwhile, nylon 6,6 supply shortened significantly amid a raft of productions problems in Europe and the US that started in Q1. A strike in the world-scale upstream adiponitrile (ADN) plant in France caused significant shortages for most 6,6 producers throughout Q2.
European nylon 6 demand was broadly healthy throughout Q2 with downstream engineering plastics, film and compounding sectors in particular running well. Short nylon 6,6 supply led to some players looking to substitute the polymer for nylon 6, which helped spur demand. Some weakness was felt in the second half of Q2 as the fibre and textile manufacturing peak season drew to a close. Nylon 6,6 demand remained good throughout the quarter despite the substantial supply limitations obscuring market dynamics.
