Updated to Q3 2018
US oxo-alcohols free-market contract prices increased by an average of 8-10 cents/lb ($176-220/tonne) during the third quarter of 2018, driven by healthy summer demand and pressure from feedstock propylene that jumped by 8 cents/lb in June and by 2 cents/lb in August amid mostly balanced oxo-alcohols supply. Transportation logistics problems continued to stymie the delivery of raw materials into the plants and the delivery of finished product to customers.
Demand for US oxo-alcohols continued to be unseasonably strong well past the usual summer slowdown following peak spring demand during the second quarter. Part of that ongoing buying interest stemmed from residual demand attributed to latter 2017 hurricanes and California wildfires and additional fires within the first half of 2018. While demand is expected to diminish in the fourth quarter, it is expected to remain stronger than the same period of 2017.
The weekly US oxo-alcohols report covers contract and spot prices for normal butanol (NBA), isobutanol (IBA), 2 ethyl hexanol (2-EH) and dioctyl phthalate (DOP).
The report provides an overview of markets for solvents and plasticisers that are the key drivers for oxo-alcohols.
