Updated to Q4 2016
US oxo-alcohols freely negotiated contract values increased by an average of 8-9 cents/lb ($176-198/tonne) from late September through the fourth quarter of 2016 mostly on pressure from sharply higher feedstock propylene.
Olefins turnarounds and unplanned outages helped drive up propylene costs by 6 cents/lb in September. That helped oxo-alcohols values rise by 4 cents/lb in September and average another 4-5 cents/lb in gains in October.
Although producers sought higher increases, gains were limited by expected seasonal slowdowns and ample inventories.
Demand continued atypically steady, altthough into November, counterbalancing a 1.5 cent/lb drop in October propylene. As propylene supply returned to the market, it yielded a 6 cent/lb drop in November propylene, but December oxo-alcohols were said unlikely to move down proportionally, if at all, as producers were seeking to maintain margins.
Meanwhile, a producer announced plans to increase its freely negotiated oxo-alcohols prices by 5 cents/lb, effective 1 January. In its customer letter, the manufacturer cited no rationale for the increases. Buyers, however, said there was no justification for the initiatives, citing weak seasonal demand and expected lower propylene prices in December.
Seasonally, however, the first quarter of each year heightens oxo-alcohols demand as paint makers begin blending paint for the US spring paint and coatings season.
