US phthalic anhydride (PA) supply was impacted by Koppers’ planned recatalysation of its flake and molten units. The maintenance took about six weeks from the end of March to mid-May. The outage did not create a shortage in the market. Customers were well covered on inventories with other producers helping to make up any shortfalls that may have occurred. The flake and molten units came back online in mid-May, starting up without incident and resuming normal production levels.
Demand was steady in the US phthalic anhydride (PA) market during the second quarter and in line with typical seasonal patterns, picking up in summer. Customers had sufficient inventory levels and were not affected by the planned outage at Koppers’ molten and flake production units. Rising PA prices in June as a result of increasing costs for feedstock orthoxylene (OX) did not result in an uptick in demand in May before the increase.
The phthalic anhydride (PA) report is published on a weekly basis and covers the monthly contract prices for molten and flake material.
It also includes relevant commentary about the PA industry in other global regions.
Our goal at ICIS is to provide an objective assessment of the PA market each week. To do so, we talk to suppliers, buyers, traders and consumers.
The US report provides a niche objective perspective that helps industry leaders to make key business decisions.
