Supply of European polycarbonate (PC) has stayed tight throughout the first quarter. Producers have attempted to introduce longer lead times to help cope with the overwhelming demand. Data from Eurostat has suggested that while there has been a slight increase in PC imports into the European market material exported from Europe has climbed to more than 45%. This is attributed to prices in Asia, particularly China, soaring to levels that have made the European market less competitive.
PC demand has outstripped supply throughout the first quarter. It is difficult to ascertain whether demand has remained unusually strong, or if the strength is exaggerated by the lack of supply to the market. Consistently, buyers are not able to get enough material despite accepting price increases and have been forced to slow production as a result. PC prices are moving independently of feedstock movements, as market fundamentals allow for suppliers to implement price increases.
