Polycarbonate (PC) values continued their upward movement in the second quarter of this year. The market was tight, and many buyers struggled to obtain all the material needed during a period when demand was buoyant.
Higher values, for both moulding and extrusion grades, emerged on the back of supply constraints. The two largest producers in Europe encountered problems of one kind or another that inhibited a normal, full capacity output, and other suppliers were not able to make up the shortfall. This put strains on availability, with delivery times extended well beyond normal.
In addition, demand was strong and increasingly appears to have been a significant influence on the balance of the market. Faced with a combination of these factors, buyers accepted that the price mechanism was an unavoidable consequence. For their part, some producers were able to bolster up eroded margins that had ensued from a long period of price softness and feedstock firmness.
