Updated to Q4 2016
Asia’s recycled polyethylene terephthalate (R-PET) prices were on a general uptrend in the fourth quarter (Q4), buoyed by relatively healthy downstream demand. It is the typical peak demand season for R-PET and its downstream recycled polyester product amid the approach of winter season and year-end period. Recycled polyester is commonly used as fillers in winter clothing and blankets and toys stuffing.
Downstream recycled polyester demand was stronger than some recycled polyester makers had expected for the fourth quarter of 2016 as downstream demand had been lacklustre for the earlier part of the year. With the unexpected good sales for recycled polyester to Europe and US markets, there was positive sentiment in the R-PET market that support ed some increases in R-PET prices.
On the supply front, R-PET producers’ margins remained squeezed. There is a general gradual direction of producers moving to produce R-PET with higher purity, as it usually fetches better netback margins.
