Updated to Q1 2017
Asia’s recycled polyethylene terephthalate (R-PET) prices firmed early in the quarter, continuing the uptrend seen the fourth quarter of 2016. R-PET prices and market sentiment were supported by the higher prices seen in the virgin PET market and relatively good downstream demand amid cold weather.
The first quarter is typically the tail end of the peak demand season for R-PET and its downstream recycled polyester sector. R-PET is commonly used as fillers in winter clothing, blankets and stuffing in toys.
In mid-February, prices hit a peak of $785/tonne CFR (cost & freight) China for hot-washed clear/white R-PET flakes, before dropping towards the end of the quarter when virgin PET feedstock prices weakened. The lower virgin PET prices weakened R-PET market sentiment and buyers retreated to the sidelines.
R-PET prices then dropped as sellers lowered their selling indications, while buying interest remained limited. Buyers are expecting further price falls once downstream demand starts to taper off and on the back of low virgin PET prices.
