Supply was gauged as stable and ample until recently, but two events in September changed the polyethylene terephalate (PET) market outlook. One was Hurricane Harvey, which disrupted production and logistics along the US Gulf Coast. The other was Alpek’s announcement that it was stopping supply of purified terephthalic acid (PTA) to PET producer M&G in Brazil and Mexico because of past due payments totalling $49m. As a result, the PET market in Latin America will likely see tightening supply and rising PET prices.
Bottled-drink and polyethylene terephalate (PET) resin demand had been considered flat in an oversupplied global market for an extended period of time until September, when Hurricane Harvey hit the US Gulf, and Alpek announced it was stopping supply of PTA to M&G in Brazil and Mexico. Consequently, demand has increased in Latin America, on concerns of tightening supply if M&G cannot produce normally. At the same time, sources noted upward pressure on prices in September.
The Latin American Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET) report covers domestic and spot prices in the region.
