Updated to Q1 2018
Q1 polyethylene terephthalate (PET) supply has been constrained in Latin America by the financial problems of producer Mossy & Ghisolfi (M&G), although market participants have been able to maneuver to keep supply at decent levels. Petroquimica Suape in Brazil operated the plant at about 75% to keep the market supplied. A similar temporary agreement happened in Mexico and the domestic market has not had supply problems. Exports from Mexico declined in the quarter and some logistic problems contributed to diminish availability of product. Prices soared in the quarter, but supply concerns have subsided.
PET demand in Latin America was normal during Q1 because any shortages in regional production were solved through imports, considering that international PET markets have been oversupplied prior to the bankruptcy problems of producer M&G. Asian markets continued to be great pricing indicators for Latin America and demand in the region has been steady throughout the quarter. What did change in Q1 was the origin of some imports, as buyers scrambled to find a replacement of M&G supply in other markets or regions.
The Latin American Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET) report covers domestic and spot prices in the region.
Producers, consumers and traders all have an interest in our timely information to help them make the best informed decisions.
To prepare the Latin American PET report, ICIS talks to buyers, producers and traders throughout the region. ICIS also includes a brief comment on other global regions which play a role in developments in Latin America. A continuous dialogue is maintained week to week with market participants.
Our PET report stands out because unlike our competitors ICIS publishes weekly.
ICIS communicates with participants on both sides of negotiations. Buyer and trader commentary is also very relevant to the PET market and to our reports.
