Updated to Q1 2017
Polyethylene terephthalate (PET) domestic prices throughout Latin America in mid-March 2017 were assessed higher compared with the beginning of the year, driven by substantial price increases for the resin and precursors in Asia and in the US.
A 3 cent/lb increase for February PET in the US lent support to higher prices in Mexico for March.
Particularly in Brazil, import-parity policies establish Brazilian prices in a close relationship to PET prices in Asia.
PET resin prices were assessed at $1,310-1,410/tonne DEL Brazil, and $1,300-1,350/tonne DEL Mexico in mid-March, compared with $1,140-1,290/tonne DEL Brazil and $1,120-1,160/tonne DEL Mexico at the beginning of 2017.
North American demand for bottled drinks, preforms and PET resin was soft, as the winter in the US and Mexico tempered activity in the first quarter of 2017, while in South America, reduced purchasing power because of weak economies in Argentina and Brazil also reduced demand.
However, sources noted hints of improved demand in Argentina and Brazil beginning in mid-March. The economies of the two countries, as well as PET demand, are projected to recover and improve significantly as the year progresses.
