Supply of polyethylene (PE) in Turkey saw numerous dips associated with public holidays such as Eid al-Adha and Ramadan, reducing production in the Middle East. Changing trade regulations with Iran also slowed supply, as sellers and buyers struggled to come to terms with new rules. These required all goods from Iran to be approved by the Turkish consulate in Iran. Hurricane Harvey also began to have an effect towards the end of the quarter.
Demand was down from the second quarter but began to pick up in September. Players expected demand to improve following Ramadan but this did not materialise. Even an unexpected uptick in Asian prices could not provide stimulus to Turkish buyers. Demand began to pick up in September as global prices all climbed. The impact of Hurricane Harvey and the recent government closure of numerous petrochemical plants have been main drivers of sentiment.
