Overall supply of polyols in Asia increased because of more export availability from China after domestic feedstock propylene oxide (PO) prices corrected from their peak. Supply from southeast Asia lengthened following the restart of a major southeast Asia-based plant in April from a turnaround, while Saudi import volumes were relatively constant. South Korean material, meanwhile, remained scarce in the import market due to sustained firm prices of polyols amid a shortage of PO in the domestic market.
Polyols demand remained lacklustre in the second quarter, especially in China, as some downstream foam makers in the eastern China region of Jiangsu province have ceased production due to strict environmental inspections. Moreover, the May/June period tends to be the traditional lull demand season for polyols. Demand was also being suppressed by generally firm prices of toluene di-isocyanate (TDI) in April and May. TDI and polyols are the two main feedstock used in the production of foam.
