Updated to Q2 2017
Polyols suppliers saw the second quarter of 2017 as a good opportunity to regain margins following upstream propylene pressure.
Propylene has mostly risen in price since April 2016, however, producers said they could not raise the value of polyols in response as there was a shortness in the toluene di-isocyanate (TDI) market. TDI and polyols combine to make flex foam and subsequently trends in one market can affect the other.
At the start of 2017, polyols sellers said that TDI availability issues had eased allowing them to, therefore, raise their prices.
The price of polyols contracts have, consequently, firmed since January 2017 with prices moving up by €60/tonne in April and €30/tonne in May. In May 2017, the midpoint of polyols prices was the joint highest it has been since February 2015. This was in spite of the fact that the propylene contract for May rolled over.
These rises resulted in some buyers, in April, saying that they were unsure if they could accept any more high price climbs as they were struggling to pass on the increased value of polyols to their customers.
