Updated to Q3 2017
Supply in the European styrene market had gone through some challenging stages during the third quarter due to some production issues that occurred in the region but also the impact deriving from Hurricane Harvey in the US. A force majeure at Moerdijk, the Ellba POSM plants running low due to the fire at Pernis, talk of a repair at the Maasvlakte site in the Netherlands were some of the problems the European market had to confront. Regarding imports, the delay of the vessels coming from the US due to Hurricane Harvey made supply even tighter towards the end of the quarter pushing spot prices higher.
The third quarter was probably the strongest season for demand with good performance coming out from the main styrenics markets. Demand in the European expandable polystyrene was strong throughout the quarter with summer weather supporting construction. EPS volumes also increased due to the supply issues in the European MDI market as customers were looking for alternative supply. The PS market also saw good demand for most part of the quarter-although not as strong as in the EPS industry. However, the strong feedstock styrene barge contract increase in September affected some of the PS order entry with customers choosing to postpone some of it for October.
The ICIS weekly European styrene report comes out every Friday and it is a mixture of spot and contract prices.
With spot, our reporters look at the present month and the forward month, and for contract there are several barge numbers that are settled and are fairly straightforward between a buyer and a seller.
The ICIS report in Europe for styrene is widely used as the benchmark reference.
ICIS speaks to small to medium-sized businesses, from the big sellers all the way down to the smaller consumers. We regard this as the best way of getting a comprehensive view of the market.
