Updated to Q1 2017
Asia's toluene prices were fluctuating in a wide range throughout the first quarter of 2017, owing to various conflicting factors in the market such as weak Chinese import demand and strong downstream toluene disproportionation (TDP) margins.
Upside pressures - seen mostly from January to early February - was attributed to the healthier-than-expected TDP spreads and strong buying activity from these downstream units. Prices hit a high of $770/tonne FOB (free on board) Korea on 27 January. Market players said that the consumption of toluene cargoes from TDP units in South Korea and Taiwan was high and this contributed to price support.
Prices continued to be trading above $730/tonne FOB Korea in the first half of February owing to shorter supply, against a backdrop of scheduled maintenances in Taiwan, Thailand and Singapore.
However, after mid-February, prices started to return gains because weak Chinese demand started having a larger impact on market sentiment. This was amid high shoretank inventories of more than 110,000 tonnes in east China.
