Availability of product in the European vinyl acetate monomer (VAM) market in the third quarter has improved significantly. At the beginning of the period, the market was still suffering from several factors that acutely constrained supply. Plant outages in both the United States and Asia, the absence of production capacity in Europe, and shortage of upstream acetic acid had all put pressure on supply. This progressively changed during quarter three, and declining prices from July reflected much easier availability.
Demand has been healthy in quarter three. The summer months, apart from the customary pause for holidays chiefly in August, are usually a period of relatively buoyant consumption on account of the painting and coatings season. The downstream construction sector will have enjoyed robust activity because of a generally healthy economic background, probably assisted by abnormally good weather in most parts of Europe. However, some sources say that the pick up in September after the holiday lull has been rather slow.
ICIS reports on vinyl acetate monomer (VAM) in Europe, US and Asia.
In Europe, the report consists of a quarterly contract price and a spot price. Both are quoted on a free delivered (FD) basis in northwest Europe (NWE) and prices are reported in euro per metric tonne.
The contract price is on a quarterly basis and in this market is settled notoriously late at the end of the quarter.
Spot prices reflect business for delivery four weeks forward.
Our report tracks the reasons for price changes in that given week.
Comments on contract talks, spot business, supply and demand issues as well as any pertinent news on imports or production that could be affecting the market.
Succinct updates are also provided for the upstream markets.
Europe is largely dependent on imported material.
