Production rates in the market have been steady with sufficient cargoes to meet regional demand. Narrow margins have done little to persuade producers to lower operating rates, as strong benzene cracks have compensated for the unprofitability of xylenes. As a result, aromatics plants and toluene disproportionation units have been running at stable rates, ensuring the region was well supplied with isomer-grade xylene. A new production facility started up in China over the quarter – Sinopec Jinling Petrochemical started up its new aromatics facility in Nanjing, Jiangsu province on 18 November. The facility will be able to produce around 100,000 tonnes/year of benzene; 300,000 tonnes/year of toluene; and 400,000 tonnes/year of xylene.
China’s appetite for isomer-grade xylene provided much of the support to the market over the quarter. Buying interest in imported cargoes was largely driven by demand from the gasoline sector. IX cargoes delivered into China on a CFR basis were cheaper than domestic parcels, and were more economical than other octane boosters such as toluene and mixed aromatics. Low inventory levels in east China also incentivised traders to pick up additional IX cargoes, but a surge in arrivals expected in December has dampened sentiment. Meanwhile, demand from downstream PX has held firm as margins remained supportive. PX producers have largely maximized operating rates where possible.
