Updated to Q4 2016
European mixed xylenes (MX) prices started to firm in September amid some buying interest from one industry player due to an outage. This saw premiums for MX above the Eurobob gasoline number comfortably above $100/tonne in some cases, although some sources felt that these levels were overdone.
Demand from the blending sector was limited overall at the start of the fourth quarter. Availability in Europe was starting to improve ahead of November, but sources also said that regional demand was also healthy which kept the market balanced overall and prices held steady.
The drop in oil and gasoline prices by early November saw MX prices fall in tandem with the lower energy costs. Demand for European export material was also sluggish, but with European extraction limited due to the bearish economics, this kept the region balanced.
Prices did start to recover as the month unfolded, however, with the spike in oil and gasoline prices by early December 2016 supporting higher MX numbers. Global price increases also helped European pricing and sentiment.
