Liquidity Development at Balkan Day-Ahead Power Exchanges

While the electricity markets in the Balkans have been developing in recent years, day-ahead volumes traded through the local exchanges are still relatively low, with most of the liquidity remaining with the benchmark HUPX.

Given the much smaller size and early stages of maturity of the Balkan markets, this trend is unlikely to change anytime soon. Although market coupling could boost traded volumes in the future, HUPX is likely to remain the most liquid day-ahead trading exchange in the region in the long term.

In this infographic, ICIS tracks the changes in liquidity of Balkan day-ahead power exchanges between 2016 and 2017, and indicates countries yet to launch an exchange.
