White paper: The growing importance of FSRUs in global LNG markets

Global LNG market growth is set to accelerate in the coming years as more than 100mtpa of production capacity under construction comes online by 2020.

At least half of that volume could find itself heading to a future FSRU. Many market participants have billed these relatively cheap and quick import facilities as key in balancing the forthcoming supply wave.

Indeed the track record of floating storage regasification units (FSRU)s bringing new buyers to market over the last decade has been impressive. More than 80% of countries that have joined the international club of LNG importers since the introduction of FSRUs in 2008 have done so through the installation of an FSRU or with the aid of a floating storage unit (FSU).

This white paper looks at the current usage of FSRUs, taking into account their capacities and geographies. It then paints a more dynamic outlook, incorporating future charter commitments, mindful of uncertainties inherent in project time-lines. A section has been dedicated to FSUs in their own right before finally moving on to the evolving landscape of counterparties themselves.
