Why natural gas stocks in Europe are low in summer 2017

Storage sites in Europe are filled with natural gas in summer when prices and demand are traditionally low, with the stored gas used to meet higher demand in the winter months.

Sites entered the gas summer on 1 April with depleted stocks due to a cold winter, and high prompt prices have discouraged shippers from replenishing these stocks.

This infographic looks at the levels of gas in store, the price spreads which have contributed to the low levels and the injections needed to replenish sites by the beginning of the gas winter on 1 October.
