Biodiesel: Market overview
Updated to Q1 2017
The highly politicised US biodiesel industry faces more uncertainty amid higher federally-mandated blend volumes and concerns that the $1/gal federal tax credit will not be renewed. President-elect Donald Trump has nominated Oklahoma Attorney General Scott Pruitt to head the envirrnmanrtal protection agency (EPA), one of the agency's most hostile critics and a sceptic of climate change science. In Europe, biodiesel producers were suggesting that a significant increase in the European methanol contract price could affect their margins and therefore lead to lower production in Q1. Other market players said this was a small part of production costs and shouldn’t impact margins as much as vegetable oil price fluctuations. The outlook for southeast Asia biodiesel is also uncertain with gasoil or diesel still priced more competitively and with producers mostly focused on supplying domestic markets. The focus ahead will be on whether the EU lifts ani-dumping duties on Indonesia palm oil exports and the implementation of Malaysia’s B10 biodiesel mandate programme, which has been repeatedly delayed.

Biodiesel is a clean burning alternative fuel, produced from renewable resources. The most commonly used feedstocks are rapeseed, soy and palm oil. Corn and tallow are also used. Rapeseed methyl ester (RME) is mainly produced in Europe; soy methyl ester (SME) comes mainly from the Americas; and palm methyl ester (PME) from Asia, in particular Malaysia and Indonesia.
Biodiesel is made through a chemical process called transesterification to make the methyl ester with glycerine and is produced as a by-product.
Biodiesel can be used in compression-ignition (diesel) engines and most oil-fired boilers. It is suitable for most applications where regular diesel is currently used. It can also be used in most modern diesel engines without modification, including those in passenger cars, sport utility vehicles, light trucks, buses, ships, trains, off-road heavy equipment and mining equipment, as well as for home heating fuel, power generation and in two-stroke engines (as a mixing agent).
