Updated to Q1 2020
Acetone availability in Europe is expected to continue to see impacts from reductions of run rates by suppliers in the first quarter of the new decade. As of early January, Asian prices had fallen away from previous highs but the arbitrage to Europe remained closed. A string of plant turnarounds in Asia and the Middle East in the first quarter of 2020 may further reduce Europe supply levels. Acetone shipments from South Africa, the US and Russia may increase if domestic spot prices remain elevated.
There were some hopes that restocking would prompt a pickup in demand in the first quarter of 2020, but as of early January the market remained overshadowed by a confluence of external forces maintaining negative sentiment. Tensions between the US and Iran, trade tensions and heightened geopolitical uncertainties are expected to continue to impact acetone demand. Analysts expect a modest recovery in the automotive sector but construction is expected to weaken.
