Updated to Q1 2021
Supply is expected to further lengthen in Q1 2021 with several new crackers and BD units expected to come on stream in Asia. More than 400,000 tonnes of additional capacities were added to the total BD capacity in China in 2020. China-origin BD has been exported and sold in Asia’s spot market, with more China-origin export material likely to be available in 2021. Additionally, a new 130,000 tonne/year BD unit in South Korea is scheduled to start up in the quarter.
Demand is expected to decrease in Q1 2021, given concerns of the coronavirus variant, which is up to 70% more transmissible. Fears of the rapid spread of the new variant are expected to dampen market sentiment and suppress demand as trades are likely to slow on potential fresh lockdown measures. The Lunar New Year holidays in mid-February are also expected to see trading activities wind down as market players in China, southeast Asia and South Korea exit the market for the holidays.
