Updated to Q4 2019
BD supply in Asia is expected to lengthen in the fourth quarter of 2019. Malaysian major producer Petronas’ 185,000 tonne/year BD plant in Pengerang, Johor, is expected to start up in the fourth quarter of the year. With no downstream facility, the new Malaysian BD plant will have around 15,000 tonnes of BD available every month, if all runs smoothly at the new 1.2m tonne/year Pengerang Refining and Petrochemical (PRefChem) ethylene cracker.
Demand is expected to soften further in the fourth quarter because of slowing economies in Asia amid the protracted US-China trade war. Several major downstream styrene butadiene rubber (SBR) and polybutadiene rubber (PBR) plants in Asia, including Korea Kumho Petrochemical Co and Lotte Ube, are shut for maintenance while other SBR and PBR plants are expected to run at reduced rates, given the seasonal lull in demand at the end of the year.
