Updated to Q4 2018
Latin America caustic soda supply was abundant in Q4 2018. Demand from Brazilian alumina refiner Alunorte continued at 50% of normal levels because of ongoing restrictions from regional authorities due to concerns about environmental contamination. Availability in Latin America was not an issue during the period, as caustic soda producers in the Americas operated normally with no major issues. US caustic soda producers sought alternative destinations to place Alunorte’s no-longer required volumes.
Caustic soda demand in Latin America during 4Q 2018 was steady from Q3 – at continuing reduced levels – mainly due to reduced rates from Brazil’s Alunorte. The refiner is consuming caustic soda at 50% of normal rates to comply with local authorities over environmental concerns. General demand in Argentina is weak because of domestic economic problems fueled by a currency devaluation in the middle of last year. Demand remained stable in Mexico, mostly from the soaps/detergents sector. Healthy demand in South America was seen from the paper/pulp sector.
