Updated to Q2 2016
The prices of Asia’s ethylene vinyl acetate (EVA) for foaming, hotmelt adhesives, wire and cable coatings applications shed around 10% in value over the second quarter due to weaker-than-projected plant utilisation rates in the downstream sectors for April and May. The Caixin general manufacturing purchasing managers’ index (PMI) for China dipped to 49.2 in May, down from 49.4 in April amid a renewed fall in total new business and export orders while the PMI in June fell to 48.6. A spate of EVA plant turnarounds in China from May to July failed to stem the price corrections, as buyers largely adopted a cautious approach in light of new EVA plant capacities in China and Taiwan. Taiwan’s Formosa Plastics Corp (FPC) commenced trial runs since 28 March at its new 72,000 tonne/year plant in Ningbo, China and commercial sales in May 2016. The onset of the weak demand season in the downstream footwear sectors in China and India further prompted a couple of EVA/low density polyethylene (LDPE) swing producers in Thailand and south Korea to divert production to LDPE from mid-May to July.
