Updated to Q1 2021
Asia’s ethylene output will rebound on cracker restarts and capacity expansion. Major northeast Asian exporters LG Chem, YNCC and ENEOS Corp are expected to resume operation at their plants in January. Shipments from southeast Asia to Taiwan and China may increase from February if Thailand’s PTT Global Chemical (PTTGC) starts up its new naphtha cracker smoothly. The 500,000 tonne/year unit is slated to commence trial runs in the first half of January.
China’s import demand is expected to draw support from domestic downstream capacity growth. Eight projects scheduled to commence operation between October 2020 and late 2021 will collectively generate additional ethylene demand of more than 900,000 tonnes/year when fully operational. Import demand from South Korea will slow down when two domestic crackers return online in January.
