Updated to Q1 2021
European HCl supply is expected to increase in H1 2021 as production issues in the upstream market have been mostly resolved. Upstream isocyanate production at Covestro and BASF has increased and force majeures at both companies were lifted, although there were unconfirmed reports that Covestro had suffered an additional production issue at one of its German plants. Global availability has also been impacted by production problems at Huntsman and Sadara.
The outlook for European HCl demand is mixed, with a second wave of coronavirus cases affecting most countries. Additional lockdowns have been scheduled in some countries which may reduce industrial demand, although there were no indications of this thus far in January, with vaccines distribution a bullish indicator. Nevertheless, annual contract price expectations have centred on increases because of the overall supply-demand situation and relatively low HCl prices in historical terms.
Supply of HCl in North America is expected to increase incrementally through the quarter as chlor-alkali production rates rise on greater demand for caustic soda and chemicals derived from its coproduct chlorine. Additionally, seasonal demand factors for water treatment and the end of the heavy period of scheduled plant maintenance has now ended. Supply, overall, will move from a period of tightened supply to one of more normal supply and availability.
US HCl demand is expected to continue to steadily recover from the lows hit in Q2 2020. Demand from the oilfield, the largest end-use sector for US HCl during recent oil booms, has begun to recover, but remains less than half of Q1 2020 demand. Demand from the steel industry has also picked up, but remains about 20% below the demand level of the year-ago quarter.
