Updated to Q4 2018
The European hydrochloric acid (HCl) market tightened in the fourth quarter as a result of logistical problems and lower chlor-alkali output. The low water level on the river Rhine made deliveries more difficult, tightened the trucking market and contributed to production problems and lower chlorine output in Europe. As a result, initial yearly price discussions for 2019 have trended towards increases. The Iberian market was the exception and saw price decreases as availability improved.
European HCl structural demand rose in the second half of 2018 as a result of increased output at the new Ecophos plant in Dunkirk, France. This has required larger consumption off HCl than was previously needed to produce downstream di-calcium phosphate (DCP). This trend contributed to higher yearly price targets for 2019 for the majority of sellers. The market was otherwise mostly unchanged quarter on quarter in terms of downstream consumption, because HCl is a mature market in Europe with little seasonality.
US supply of hydrochloric acid (HCl) remained steady during most of the fourth quarter, although it lengthened during the last weeks of the year as oilfield activity slowed on the limitations imposed by winter weather. Acid is an important ingredient in the hydraulic fracturing process that US drillers have developed to free petroleum from tight shale formations.
Demand from the oilfield plateaued during the third quarter and fell during the fourth as oil prices receded from their 2018 highs and drillers and exploration companies reduced exploration and production activity. Demand from the oilfield is decisive in the HCl market, where consumption of acid for steel pickling, chemical processing, water treatment and other uses holds fairly steady.
