Updated to Q3 2020
HCl production is expected to be higher in Q3 as demand in the upstream isocyanates industry has steadily increased. Lockdowns across Europe caused by the coronavirus pandemic have been lifted and upstream demand has therefore steadily recovered. The outlook is tempered because some shutdowns originally scheduled for earlier in the year may instead occur in 2H 2020 due to the impact of the pandemic.
European HCl demand is expected to be stable or somewhat higher in the third quarter compared to the second quarter. The economy has slowly recovered following shutdowns which took place during the coronavirus pandemic, and this process is expected to continue in Q3 with business sentiment improving. However the summer holiday period will also take place in the third quarter, which is expected to reduce activity.
It is not expected that supply of HCl will increase during the third quarter because of the bleak outlook for demand. The market is already long on supply and the production of acid as a by product of other chemical processes is likely to continue to pump acid into the market at rates higher than the demand draw. On purpose producers of acid have pushed operating rates to new lows and will likely finely calibrate production to any return of demand.
Demand recovery for acid is expected to be flat in the oilfield for the remainder of the year and into 2021. Low prices for crude oil, a global oversupply of crude and the economic devastation already wreaked on the domestic industry is expected to continue to mute operations. Demand for steel pickling will depend on the demand recovery in automotive production, according to market participants. That is also expected to take longer than the remainder of 2020.
