Updated to Q3 2018
Supply for polymeric methyl diphenyl diisocyanate (MDI) remained long in the US over the third quarter as most domestic plants were operating normally while Asian exporters raised their allocations to the North American market as North America provided better netbacks than Asia throughout the period. Monomeric MDI, in contrast, saw ongoing tightness in supply as global availability remained short of demand growth and less imported product was available.
US MDI demand was healthy during the third quarter as the high season for the construction along ongoing growth in polyurethane demand supported strong consumption for MDI. North American MDI demand was said to be stronger than demand for the product in Asia or Europe during the quarter.
Updated to Q3 2018
US toluene diisocyanate (TDI) availability lengthened in the third quarter after the long anticipated restart of BASF’s TDI plant in Ludwigshafen, Germany resulted in looser supplies on a global basis. Global operating rates for TDI have been higher in 2018 following a prolonged period of supply tightness throughout 2017 and into the early months of 2018.
TDI demand in the US witnessed a slowdown in the furniture and bedding sector as imported mattress gained market share relative to domestic product. Demand from other downstream uses was normal.
