Updated to Q3 2018
European phenol supply tightened further in the third quarter as demand intensified. Additionally, there was market talk of operating rates being lowered as producers looked to balance co-product acetone length. This lack of material meant that premiums were placed on phenol spot pricing as well as quarterly adders for contracts. Supply was also limited by turnarounds at French seller Novapex’s Peage site in July and August.
Demand for European phenol was strong in the third quarter, although there were downstream turnarounds at Italian seller Radici Group’s adipic acid Zeitz and Novara plants. The 100,000 tonne/year Zeitz site in Germany was shut down and restarted in July. Meanwhile, the company’s 90,000 tonne/year Novara facility in Italy underwent the turnaround from August to early September. Downstream bisphenol A (BPA) consumption was high at points in the third quarter before fundamentals became volatile in September.
