Price assessments cover contracts in Europe and spot in Asia and this unbiased independent intelligence is supported by commentary about demand, supply, production issues and graphs. This news and market analysis is an invaluable resource for market participants to refer to when making those crucial business decisions.
Updated to Q4 2019
Supply was largely unchanged throughout quarter, with most plants operating at high rates. With feedstock methanol prices almost hitting a historical low in the same quarter, POM producers enjoyed healthy margins, with POM prices relatively stable. Hence, there was little reason for POM producers to cut their run rates.
Demand improved slightly in the quarter, helping to support small price increases amid stable supply. Downstream demand improved as buyers geared up for increased production ahead of the year-end and Lunar New Year holidays. Sentiment improved amid expectations of the US-China trade war seeing a resolution sooner rather than later.
European supply of polyacetal (POM) continued to be balanced during the final quarter of 2019. Low demand limited pressure on supply and there were no known production issues.
Demand for POM was weak throughout 2019 due to low consumption from the automotive sector and this trend continued into the final quarter of the year. A producer said that demand softened further in November and December as a result of buyers’ destocking activities ahead of the year end.

Polyacetal or POM is a crystalline plastic often used for technical applications due to its strength, ductility (ability to be drawn into threads without breaking) and good machinability. Its properties make it suitable for click connections (e.g. bicycle lamp holders). The material is known for its stiffness, strength and hardness up to 120ºC, and is as elastic as many metals. It is wear resistant and has a very low friction coefficient. The colour is opaque white, and carbon black can be added to protect the product from UV-light.
