Polybutadiene butadiene rubber (PBR/BR), is a polymerised butadiene. Butadiene is the main feedstock for PBR. Its key properties include high elasticity, strong wear resistance, along with high flexibility at variable temperatures. It is especially good for uses which require exposure to low temperatures.
The major use of PBR is in tyres, with a high portion of the polymer produced going into treads and sidewalls. PBR has excellent abrasion resistance (good tread wear), and low rolling resistance (good fuel economy) due to its low glass transition temperature.
Apart from tyre treads, belts, hoses, gaskets and other automobile parts are also made from the material because it stands up to cold temperatures better than other elastomers.
PBR also has a major application as an impact modifier for polystyrene (PS) and acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS) resins.
