Updated to Q1 2018
There were no new capacities added in the first quarter, while operating rates of major Asian producers were generally at high to near 100% capacity with the exception of some maintenance outages. China’s Sanfangxiang Group’s 200,000 tonnes/year line is shut due to a technical problem and the maintenance is expected to last for around 20 days while South Korea’s TK Chemical had a schedule plant maintenance for its 240,000 tonnes/year plant that lasted 17 days.
Demand was surprisingly stable as producers said they did good sales early in the quarter amid the uptrend seen in feedstock PTA and MEG prices. Sales later slowed down in the quarter as buyers wait and see when feedstock prices became volatile and showed some falls. As the typical peak demand season for summer is approaching, there was continuous demand nonetheless.
