Updated to Q3 2018
Jiangyin Chengxing Group restarted its 600,000 tonnes/year plant in China and Far Eastern Petrochemical Vietnam started up its new 400,000 tonnes/year PET line in the quarter. On the other hand, several Chinese producers – Wankai, San Fang Xiang and China Resources Packaging, had, or are having, production cuts due to poor market economics for PET production. Some had carried/are carrying out maintenances when the lines were/are shut. Other Asian producers in Taiwan had planned plant maintenances in September.
Demand started to taper off before July as buyers were on a wait and see stance towards the tail end of the peak demand season amid relatively high PET prices and expectations of supply. The slower demand brought prices down quickly and PET spread from feedstock narrowed. In the middle of the quarter, PET prices trended up, following surges in feedstock prices. However, demand remained slow and PET prices lowered to stimulate buying interest, resulting in narrower PET spread from feedstock.

Polyethylene terephthalate (PET) exists both as an amorphous (transparent) and a semi-crystalline (opaque and white) thermoplastic, and can be made into either a resin or a film.
ICIS produces a weekly report on polyethylene terephthalate (PET) in Asia. The report contains spot price assessments for fibre grade, bottle grade and film grade PET chips.
Asia spot prices for bottle grade chips are quoted on a free-on-board (FOB) basis across five regions – South Korea, China, Taiwan, southeast Asia (SE Asia) and India.
The report also tracks cost & freight (CFR) northeast Asia (NE Asia) India spot prices for fibre grade, as well as prices for film grade chips on a FOB East Asia-basis.
We also provide a round-up of schedules and any unexpected shutdowns to give readers an overview of the supply situation.
Feedstock purified terephthalic acid (PTA) and monoethylene glycol (MEG) prices are an important driver of PET prices, therefore, the report includes feedstock market information and price quotations.
We speak to a cross-section of market players, producers, end users and traders to gather the information for our reports. This is then analysed and checked to eliminate bias and ensure we provide the most accurate information available on the market.
Subscribers find the report useful as it provides them with crucial up-to-date data that helps them stay ahead of the latest developments across PET markets. They use the assessments as an essential aid for their own business financial and pricing discussions.
