Updated to Q3 2018
The summer is peak polyethylene terephthalate (PET) bottling season. Product was balanced to tight, and feedstock purified terephthalic acid (PTA) was limited, partly due to a fire in Mexico. In July, imports of PET (primary forms) into the EU amounted to 60,613 tonnes, a decrease of just over 12,000 tonnes compared with July 2017, according to Eurostat data. South Korea, India, Turkey and China were the main sources of imported product. Only limited import volumes were due in August and September.
The warmer months of the year command the highest demand, and the summer displayed a typical uptick in customers’ requirements. Rather than the usual monthly commitments, demand and prices were good enough in July that buyers decided to buy forward and sellers agreed. In August and September demand started to tail off, partly because customers had covered themselves, the low season was around the corner and sellers had sold out early each month.
