Updated to Q3 2021
The propylene market began Q3 in backwardation amid widespread expectations of loosening supply. Underpinning these expectations are projections of higher refinery utilisation, fewer supply disruptions and softening demand from derivative producers as they restock inventories. Market participants will carefully monitor this year’s Atlantic hurricane season, which could impact the supply recovery. Increased drilling activity should keep producers well supplied with feedstock NGLs.
End-user demand for propylene derivatives is expected to remain strong, supported by easing coronavirus-related restrictions and the broader economic recovery. Urgent demand from downstream producers should ease as they achieve improved inventory levels. North America – including Mexico – might record a slight rise in propylene consumption, hitting 14.6m tonnes in 2021, up from about 14.5m tonnes in 2020, according to Paolo Scafetta, ICIS senior olefin analyst.
