Updated to Q1 2021
As much as 15% of US propylene will shut down for planned maintenance during the first half of 2021, contributing to further market tightness. Refinery utilisation is expected to inch up, but not substantially until Q2 or later. Unfavorable economics will limit the cracking of heavier feeds like propane and butane, due to elevated demand for the liquids as heating fuels, resulting in less propylene co-production.
Demand for US propylene was hit hard by the coronavirus, but has since recovered and is expected to continue to grow in 2021. Durable goods demand to remain supported into the coming months on an ongoing recovery in manufacturing activity, additional demand from construction and home improvement applications as well and improving demand for automotive applications. Any progress in containing the coronavirus will only strengthen consumption of most propylene derivatives.
