ICIS offers unrivalled coverage for the emerging styrene industry.
Updated to Q3 2018
Turnarounds understood to be underway for at least four European plants in September and October were lowering styrene supply, as they offered limited volumes on the spot market. Demand-side reductions over the same period meant the market was viewed as balanced. The spot market looked tight ahead of September contract negotiations, prompting a vessel to be booked from southern Europe in early September, though the market proved to be far more balanced. Pricing remained strongly influenced by volatile upstream markets.
Demand was firm amid the traditional peak manufacturing demand season. Market participants did note that the seasonal increase in downstream demand was not as stark as previous years, with escalating tensions with US and China hampering sentiment. As downstream markets were affected by recent volatility and largely higher prices, production margins took a hit, with more downstream producers mulling cutting run rates towards the end of the quarter.
