Updated to Q3 2018
Availability of purified terephthalic acid (PTA) was constrained through the second quarter, due to a series of global production upsets. In July 2018, imports of terephthalic acid into the EU amounted to 72,281 tonnes, according to Eurostat data. South Korea and Mexico were the main importers. The material was dispatched before a fire at Alpek in Mexico. Indorama Ventures Portugal began operating its recently-purchased 700,000 tonne/year plant in July. PKN Orlen’s Polish plant was scheduled for a shutdown to start in September.
The summer is the traditional peak polyethylene terephthalate (PET) bottling season, the main application for PTA, and the hot weather in quarter two supported this demand. Several unplanned outages meant buyers of PET were keenly stocking up where they were unable to beforehand. Additional demand came in the form of EIPET an Indorama Ventures and Dhunseri joint venture in Egypt, which restarted one of two lines after years of being idled.
Supply of purified terephthalic acid (PTA) was significantly impacted in the third quarter because of a sales allocation by a major US producer that lasted most of the summer and a fire at a major plant in Mexico that supplies the US. Supply was sufficient to meet demand but there was little room for additional outages. These conditions began resolving by mid-September, when the Mexico plant was heard to be up and running again.
Demand for PTA was high in the third quarter amid peak consumption season in North America. Production issues did not cause significant impacts downstream as polyethylene terephthalate (PET) producers worked to mitigate any shortages. Still, the market was tight both in the US and globally. Demand remained strong throughout the quarter on sustained hot temperatures. Demand in Asia strengthened significantly in August on strong polyester demand, pushing prices higher there.
