During the coal phase-out, ICIS power analysts have predicted that gas demand from the power sector will rise to around 17bcm by 2023 based on the coal phase-out document released by the German energy ministry earlier this year.
From a near-term perspective, ICIS analysis shows that clean spark spreads in Germany are at their most profitable this year than any time in recent memory. This means that power plants will take up a larger share of gas demand in the country.
