Knoll ups drugs portfolio with Sudco purchase

Amsterdam-based Knoll, the Dutch arm of BASF's pharmaceuticals business, has acquired Sudco, the largest independent drugmaker in the Netherlands.

Sudco's portfolio contains 44 active ingredients that go into around 100 different generic preparations, all sold on the local market. These generated sales of Dfl5.7bn ($3.3bn) in 1995.

According to Knoll, Sudco is to be operated as a subsidiary of Knoll. All products will continue to be sold under the Sudco name while marketing and distribution operations are to remain at their present Dutch sites.

Knoll said the acquisition is an 'important step' towards expand ing its business in the Netherlands where it has annual sales of Dfl21m.
