LONDON (CNI)--Dow Chemical is to expand vinyl chloride monomer (VCM) production at its BSL subsidiary at Schkopau, eastern Germany this year to 330 000 tonne/year from 150 000 tonne/year, it told CNI Friday.

The extra 180 000 tonne/year capacity will come onstream in October or November. This will follow a six week shutdown of the first train in August and the first part of September to allow connection of the second train, a Dow spokeswoman confirmed.

Most of Dow's VCM output at Schkopau feeds into EVC's PVC facilities, which EVC took over from BSL last year. As part of the takeover agreement with Dow, EVC is building a new PVC plant at Schkopau which will double capacity to 330 000 - 340 000 tonne/year in 2000. Dow owns 80% of BSL.
