HOUSTON (CNI)--The Union Carbide unit of Dow Chemical said Friday it has permanently closed its 43-year-old Seadrift, Texas olefins plant as planned.

Supply to downstream businesses will be handled from increased production at other crackers and by purchase agreements already in place.

The unit stopped operating 12 September.

Said Dow: "Environment, health and safety considerations were a top priority during the shutdown and cleaning of the unit."

Since 1960, the unit has produced 15.9m tonne/year of ethylene.

Dow's Texas City olefins plant was taken out of operation 16 June.

The company said it has undertaken projects to maintain the existing integration benefits at the Seadrift site so it will continue to function optimally following the shutdown.
