SINGAPORE (ICIS news)--Israel's Carmel Olefins has started up its new PP plant at Haifa Bay and completed expanding its cracker at the same site, a company source said on Tuesday.

It hopes to achieve full production at the new 250,000 tonne/year PP plant within a month, the source said. He did not disclose the PP plant’s current operating rate.

“We have begun exporting material from the new plant to our key markets - western Europe and Turkey,” the source said, adding that the producer’s total PP capacity was increased to 450,000 tonnes/year after the new plant started up.

The company has also expanded its cracker at the same site by 25% to produce 300,000 tonnes/year of ethylene and 165,000 tonnes/year of propylene.

Its 165,000 tonne/year low density PE (LDPE) plant at the same location was not expanded as demand for PE was not as strong as that for PP, the source said.

Israel's total domestic PP consumption is estimated at 300,000 tonnes/year.
