SINGAPORE (ICIS news)--Israel's Carmel Olefins was expected to start up its new metathesis unit at Haifa Bay very soon, a company source said on Thursday.
"It's not possible to give an exact start-up date, but the unit is in the last stages of being commissioned," the source said.
The metathesis unit produces 180,000 tonnes/year of propylene using ethylene and butane feedstocks, but the source declined to say how Carmel planned to use the output.
Carmel started up its new 250,000 tonne/year polypropylene (PP) plant and completed an expansion at its cracker at Haifa Bay earlier this month.
It did not expand its 165,000 tonne/year low density polyethylene (LDPE) plant at the same location as demand for PE was not as strong as that for PP, the source said.
Israel's total domestic PP consumption is estimated at 300,000 tonnes/year.
