LONDON (ICIS)--Bayer MaterialScience is investing €90m ($132m) to boost polycarbonate (PC) production capacity at its Krefeld-Uerdingen site in Germany by 21% over the next four years, it said on Monday.
The plant's current capacity of 330,000 tonnes/year will be increased in stages to reach an annual capacity of 400,000 tonnes, the German polymers producer said in a statement.
"Global demand for polycarbonate has increased considerably, with the strongest growth in Asia/Pacific, particularly in China,” said head of polycarbonates Gunter Hilken.
“But there is also increased demand in Europe where the material’s versatility and other properties make it an ideal material for a variety of applications, for example in the automotive industry, where it is used to make vehicles lighter and more energy efficient.
“For Europe, we expect an average growth of 5%,” added Hilken.
Bayer MaterialScience is also currently rebuilding chlorine production facilities at the site to increase energy efficiency, the company said in the same statement.
